West Coast Swing is a dance that can be performed to almost any type of music. It thrives on the enjoyment of dancing, creative engagement with the music during the freestyle phases, and a variable step pattern that allows everyone to incorporate their own style.
The name West Coast Swing dates back to the 1940s, when the dance originated from Lindy Hop on the west coast of the USA. The movement patterns and bounces typical of swing dances have been almost completely replaced over the years. Today, West Coast Swing is danced in a narrow dance area, known as the slot. Great importance is attached to smooth leading and even movement patterns, which makes the dance appear very fluid and soft. Musically, West Coast Swing is very versatile today: it is danced to modern pop, rock, and R&B music in 4/4 time. There are some well-known videos on social media, e.g., https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsX87384tnQ.
A big part of West Coast Swing is the social aspect: dancing involves dancing with different partners and constantly adapting. To practice this, partners are regularly switched during the course. That's why you're welcome to register for the course on your own. The classic role model, where the man leads and the woman follows, has been adapted in West Coast Swing – there are leaders and followers. You can decide for yourself which role you want to dance and also switch during the course or while dancing. West Coast Swing offers many possibilities!
